Ruturaj Gaikwad reached 1000 IPL runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium dufring CSK vs SRH on Monday becoming only the third batter to achieve the milestone at Chepauk after MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina. He averages 52 plus at the ground and owns eight fifties and a century there. The milestone arrived off his third run against SRH in Match 63.
None of that context made the innings that followed any easier to watch for CSK fans because Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed for 15 off 21 balls with no boundaries in what is as close to a must-win game as CSK have had all season.
Pat Cummins took his wicket and completed a three-wicket spell. The 1000-run milestone was a footnote in an innings that showcased the most persistent problem of Ruturaj Gaikwad’s IPL 2026 campaign.
Gaikwad reached the end of the powerplay on 9 off 11 balls with no boundaries. He was the second batter this entire season to complete the first six overs without hitting a single four or six, the only other instance being Arshin Kulkarni of LSG against RCB on May 7.
His strike rate in the powerplay across the season sits at 124.65 inside the field restrictions which is the fourth most passive among batters who have faced 50 plus balls in IPL 2026 behind only Rishabh Pant at 94.11, Nitish Rana at 105.97 and Cameron Green at 120. His overall IPL 2026 strike rate of 125 is the lowest of any batter with 200 or more runs this season.
The 21-ball stretch without a boundary at any point in his innings is the longest by any opener in IPL 2026. Repeatedly through the season the impetus for CSK has come from the other end rather than from their captain and today was no different with Kartik Sharma taking up the challenge against Praful Hinge in the eighth over while Gaikwad was still tied down.
Cummins eventually ended the innings at 1.3 of the second over bowling short at Gaikwad on middle stump and having him pull to deep square leg for a catch. Gone for 15 off 21 balls. Strike rate 71.42. No fours. No sixes. In a match CSK needed to win.
The fairest thing you can say about Gaikwad’s IPL 2026 is that his 200 plus runs demonstrate he is not completely out of form and his 52 plus average at Chepauk shows he can still build an innings.
The difficult thing you have to say is that IPL 2026 has changed around him and he has not fully changed with it.Other teams have top order batters hitting out from ball one and constructing powerplay totals that frame the entire match. CSK’s captain continues to trust the old-school method of taking time to get himself in.
On flat surfaces against moderate attacks that method can still work. Against SRH with Cummins, Malinga and the conditions that Chepauk provides in a match CSK needed points from it cost them the most important overs of the innings before a single boundary had been hit.
Cummins took three wickets today and reached 200 T20 wickets in the same spell. He removed Samson, Kartik Sharma and Gaikwad on a pitch that by his own standards was not made for his bowling. The best batsmen find a way to score against good bowling on difficult surfaces. Gaikwad has the record at this ground to suggest he is capable of that. Today he found neither the boundary nor the answer.
