Kolkata Knight Riders have faced criticism due to their performance in the IPL 2026 season. The team captained by Ajinkya Rahane has failed to show strong performance with consistency on the field. Even though the team has made a comeback after a bad start, KKR has not been able to impress much this season. The fans are not only angry with the condition of the team but now KKR's decision regarding a player has spoiled the mood of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
A PTI report has revealed that the Indian board is worried about the fitness of its star spinner Varun Chakraborty. Also, the board is very unhappy with the fact that despite the injury, KKR forcefully fielded Varun and made him bowl the entire 4 overs, which affected his performance. This displeasure of the board is also because Varun Chakraborty is a part of BCCI's central contract and is an important part of the team in limited overs format.
During the IPL 2026 season itself, Varun had to suffer a hairline fracture in his toe, due to which he could not play in the match against Bengaluru.
Kolkata had lost that match, due to which the team was in a 'do or die' situation to remain in the tournament. In such a situation, KKR fielded Varun in the next match against Gujarat but he was ineffective. During this time, he was also seen struggling with his injury. In such a situation, questions are being raised whether Kolkata played Varun without full fitness? This is the reason due to which BCCI is angry and has expressed its displeasure directly to the executives of KKR. Not only this, it has been told in the report that due to being part of the central contract, BCCI's medical team will now keep an eye on Varun's fitness and it will take the final decision whether Varun will play in the remaining matches of IPL 2026 or not.
