Kolkata: Kolkata Knight Riders delivered a major upset in the Indian Premier League after defeating Gujarat Titans by 29 runs at Eden Gardens, bringing an end to GT’s six-match winning streak and reviving their own playoff hopes.
The defeat has slightly complicated Gujarat Titans’ path to the playoffs, while KKR remain mathematically alive in the competition.
KKR’s innings was built around a sensational knock from Finn Allen, who played a blistering innings of 93 runs from only 35 deliveries.
After a cautious beginning on a surface affected by overnight weather conditions, Allen shifted gears and launched a fierce attack on Gujarat bowlers.
He struck 10 sixes and four boundaries, turning the momentum decisively in KKR’s favour.
Young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi also played one of his finest IPL innings, scoring 82 from 44 balls.
He later received strong support from Cameron Green, who remained unbeaten and accelerated the scoring in the final overs.
Fielding errors proved costly for Gujarat Titans, who dropped four catches during the match.
Allen benefited from two reprieves, while further chances involving Raghuvanshi and Green were also missed.
The missed opportunities eventually allowed KKR to post a massive total that placed Gujarat under pressure.
During the chase, Gujarat began positively with captain Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan building early momentum.
However, Gujarat suffered a setback after Sai Sudharsan retired hurt following an injury to his left elbow.
Gill attempted to keep the chase alive with an aggressive innings and scored 85 runs from 49 balls.
But with the required run rate climbing rapidly, his dismissal in the 17th over significantly reduced Gujarat’s hopes.
Sunil Narine produced an important spell, especially in crucial phases of the innings.
His disciplined bowling restricted Gujarat’s scoring rate and helped KKR regain control when the chase threatened to gather momentum.
KKR also faced concerns after Matheesha Pathirana walked off the field after appearing to suffer another injury setback.
Despite challenges in the bowling department, Kolkata defended the target successfully through disciplined bowling and strong fielding efforts.
The victory keeps KKR in contention for the playoffs, while Gujarat Titans will now shift focus to their final league-stage fixture against Chennai Super Kings.
