Delhi fast bowler Prince Yadav has pushed himself into the India selection conversation at exactly the right time.

According to a PTI report, his name is set to be discussed when the national selection committee meets on May 19 to pick squads for the one-off Test and three-match ODI series against Afghanistan.

The biggest focus will still be Jasprit Bumrah’s workload, with the pace spearhead likely to play either the Test or the ODI series, but not both. That creates space for selectors to look at fresh options, and Prince has done enough in domestic one-day cricket and IPL 2026 to make the room notice.

With Harshit Rana unlikely to be fit soon, this could be the kind of lower-risk bilateral series where India try a new seamer before the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle starts getting serious.

Prince Yadav in selection discussion for India vs Afghanistan series

The PTI report makes it clear that Prince Yadav is not yet a confirmed pick, but he is very much in the conversation. That matters because India’s fast-bowling queue is always crowded, and breaking into even the discussion stage requires more than one good spell on television.

Prince’s strongest case comes from his 50-over record. He took 17 wickets in eight matches in the last edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s national one-day championship. That is important because this is an ODI series, not just a reward for IPL form. Selectors are more likely to trust a player who has already shown he can take wickets in the longer white-ball format.

His IPL 2026 season has added momentum to that domestic case. Prince has picked up 16 wickets in 12 matches and has looked like one of the more exciting Indian pace options in the tournament. His dismissal of Virat Kohli with a sharp seaming delivery became a standout moment because it showed both skill and nerve. Wickets are one thing; getting a player like Kohli with a proper fast-bowler’s delivery gets attention.

This is why Prince is being called a dark horse. He is not the obvious headline selection, but he has the numbers, timing and vacancy around him to become a serious option.

Jasprit Bumrah may play only one format

Jasprit Bumrah’s workload is the central issue before the Afghanistan series. As per PTI, Bumrah will either play the one-off Test or the three ODIs next month, with selectors keen to avoid overloading him after the IPL.

The Test will be played from June 6 to 10 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. It is not part of the World Test Championship cycle, which gives India more room to manage their senior players. The three ODIs will be played on June 14 in Dharamshala, June 17 in Lucknow and June 20 in Chennai.

That schedule comes right after the IPL final on May 31, so the recovery window is short. Bumrah remains India’s most valuable fast bowler, and the management will not want to stretch him unnecessarily before bigger assignments. Workload management has already been a major topic around him, especially after past criticism over how selectively he was used in long Test series.

If Bumrah plays the Test, India may rest him from the ODIs. If he plays the ODIs, he may skip the Test. Either way, his limited availability opens the door for another pacer in at least one squad.

India-Afghanistan schedule, ODI context and recent Test concerns under Gautam Gambhir

The India vs Afghanistan series will begin with a one-off Test from June 6 to 10 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, though the match will not be part of the World Test Championship cycle.

The three ODIs will follow on June 14 in Dharamshala, June 17 in Lucknow and June 20 in Chennai. The ODI leg carries extra attention because it is the only international format in which Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are still active, and it also marks the early stage of India’s long-term preparation for the ODI World Cup 2027.

India have historically dominated Afghanistan in ODIs, but the selectors will still see this as more than a routine bilateral series because the pace pool needs fresh options beyond Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

In Tests, the context is different: India’s recent red-ball form has been worrying, with three Test series defeats in the last two years, including home clean sweeps against New Zealand in 2024 and South Africa in 2025. That makes the Afghanistan assignment useful for recalibration, even if it does not count towards WTC points.
