Lucknow Super Giants marked a solid 7-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings. The match happened at Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Friday evening. Captain Rishabh Pant led his team well to secure vital points.
But something unexpected happened after the match concluded surprisingly. IPL authorities released an official statement about the LSG captain specifically. The news added a bitter note to an otherwise perfect evening.
The victory moved LSG up the points table for the IPL 2026 season. However, Pant faced consequences for something that happened during the game.
Rishabh Pant got a ₹12 lakh fine hit on him by the BCCI officials. The penalty came just because of LSG’s slow over-rate during play. Article 2.22 of IPL’s Code of Conduct covers the minimum over-rate time.
This marked LSG’s first such offense in the entire IPL 2026 season. The fine stays purely monetary without affecting the match result whatsoever. Captains carry responsibility for maintaining proper over-rates always during matches.
Slow over-rates happen when teams fail to complete their bowling quota on time. Delays in deliveries, field changes, or stoppages cause this problem. Broadcast schedules and tournament operations need matches to finish on schedule.
Something unusual occurred during this LSG victory against CSK interestingly. Rishabh Pant didn’t bat at throughout the entire match! This was the first time in IPL 2026 he wasn’t needed.
Previously this season, Pant batted at number 3 in 7 games. He came in at number 4 in three matches and opened once. But against CSK, LSG chased down the target without requiring him.
After the match, Pant explained the team’s strategy behind this decision. “I was ready to bat but wanted to give opportunities to others,” he stated. Players who hadn’t batted much deserved their chances at the crease.
LSG keeps experimenting with their opening pair throughout IPL 2026 constantly. Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram opened together initially during early matches. Then Marsh and Josh Inglis tried forming the combination afterwards.
Pant admitted finding the right opening partnership remains challenging still. “We have a good combination but overthinking spoils things sometimes,” he said. The captain expressed pride in how LSG played regardless of season outcomes.
