Dharamshala (HPCA Stadium): It rained heavily on Thursday night in the beautiful Dharamshala Stadium of Himachal Pradesh, but in the end the victory went to Mumbai Indians (MI). Mumbai Indians defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 6 wickets in a high-scoring thriller. Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer described the defeat as “one to be taken seriously” for the team, as it is their fifth consecutive defeat in the tournament.
Tilak Verma’s ‘masterclass’ innings
Tilak Verma was the hero of Mumbai Indians’ victory while chasing the huge target of 201 runs. He played a stormy inning of 75 unbeaten runs in just 33 balls. Tilak not only hit big shots but also kept Punjab bowlers under pressure by rotating the strike. Captain Iyer also praised Tilak and said, “Tilak played an amazing game, he was choosing his shots very well and he handled the field very well.”
Umarzai’s cameo and Shardul’s claw
Earlier, Punjab Kings had posted a strong score of 200/8 thanks to the fireworks from Prabhsimran Singh (57) and finally Azmatullah Umarzai (38 runs, 17 balls). Umarzai had completely changed the momentum of the team in the death overs. However, Shardul Thakur was the most successful bowler for Mumbai, registering impressive figures of 4/39 and preventing Punjab from reaching any bigger score.
turning point of the match
Ryan Rickelton (48) gave a solid start for Mumbai, but in the end Will Jacques (25 not out, 10 balls) supported Tilak Verma well and achieved the target with one ball remaining. For Punjab, Umarzai also took 2 wickets in bowling, but he could not lead the team to victory.
Iyer still has hope
Despite consecutive defeats, Shreyas Iyer has not given up hope. He said that the upcoming match is against Bengaluru (RCB) and the team is fully prepared to make a comeback. With 13 points from 12 matches, Punjab still remains fourth in the points table, but the path to the playoffs has now become like “do or die” for them.
