Chennai Super Kings batter Urvil Patel was at his best at Chepauk on May 10, scoring a 13-ball half-century against Lucknow Super Giants. He equalled Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record for the fastest fifty in the history of the Indian Premier League. His knock came in a chase of 204 runs.

When Sanju Samson was dismissed for 28 runs off 14 balls, the LSG thought of dominating the five-time champions.

Urvil didn’t allow the rivals to dictate terms. The young batter started taking bowlers apart, turning the contest in favour of his team.

He was severe against Avesh Khan and struck the last three balls of the overs for three sixes and put the pressure on Rishabh Pant’s team. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad gave a strike to Urvil against Digvesh Rathi.

He struck two more maximums to take the tally to five consecutive sixes across two overs.

It looked like Urvil would hit six sixes in a row like Riyan Parag, who smashed six consecutive sixes against the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2025.

Urvil was unable to complete the streak as the next delivery went for a four. He then recorded a 98-metre six. The fans at Chepauk had gone wild by then. He completed his fifty in the over of Mohammed Shami, reaching the landmark in 13 balls, matching Rajasthan Royals’ opener Jaiswal’s record.

He celebrated especially, pulling out a note that read: “This is for you, Papa.” He showed it towards the stands.

Chennai won the game by 5 wickets to reach the fifth spot in the IPL 2026. Before Urvil’s carnage, LSG were looking confident, having crossed the 200-run mark, with Josh Inglis and Shahbaz Ahmed batting well.

CSK have been unsuccessful in chasing big totals, and they have failed to win a game while chasing a 180-plus target since 2018.

But Urvil completely changed the flow of the game in a span of a few overs. Shahbaz dismissed him in the 10th over after accumulating 62 runs.

He is from Gujarat and is one of the explosive hitters in domestic cricket. He likes to hit big shots from ball one. His father, Mukesh Patel, was a sprinter and physical training teacher, and he ensured his son was also involved in sports.

The family decided to sacrifice to make him a successful cricketer. He came to the limelight when he scored a 41-ball hundred for Gujarat vs Arunachal Pradesh in the 2023 Vijay Hazare Trophy. It was the second-fastest ton by an Indian batter after Yusuf Pathan’s 40-ball landmark.
