Lionel Messi has officially joined the conversation regarding Neymar’s future, and he isn’t holding back. The Argentine legend recently threw his support behind his former teammate, making it clear that he wants to see Neymar leading the line for Brazil at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Even though Neymar has been dealing with a rough recovery from a serious knee injury, Messi believes that he is still “one of the best.”

Neymar, Brazil’s all‑time leading scorer with 79 goals and the only reason there’s even a debate about his inclusion is his health. Since tearing his ACL and meniscus back in October 2023, it’s been a long and frustrating road back. He’s recently returned to his roots at Santos FC, but the consistency that made him a global superstar is still a work in progress.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has repeatedly said Neymar will be considered if he is fully fit, adding in April that the striker has two months to show he is ready.

Messi Wants To See Neymar In FIFA World Cup 2026

Having played alongside him at both Barcelona and PSG, Messi knows better than anyone what Neymar brings to a locker room. He pointed out that it would be “wonderful” to see him there because of what he represents for the sport.

“It would be wonderful to see him at the World Cup because of what he means to Brazil and to football.”

Messi, who captained Argentina to the World Cup title in Qatar in 2022 and is expected to make his final appearance at the tournament, also listed Brazil among the contenders for the 2026 edition, alongside Spain and France.

“I still believe Brazil is always a contender and has the players necessary to compete for the title in any major tournament,” he said.

Neymar’s World Cup Stats:

National Record 79 Goals (All-time leader)
Experience 3 World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022)
WC Scoring 8 Goals
Total Caps 128 Appearances

The 2026 World Cup, co‑hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico, will begin on June 11.
