Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Abhishek Sharma broke Virat Kohli’s eight-year-old record of the most number of sixes in a single season of the Indian Premier League by an Indian player. The 23-year-old registered the record during his franchise’s game against Punjab Kings in Match 69 of IPL 2024 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
The left-handed batter surpassed Kohli’s milestone with a six against pacer Rishi Dhawan in the sixth over of the SRH chase. Abhishek 39th six in the 17th season took him past Kohli’s tally of 38 sixes in 2016.
After Travis Head’s dismissal on the first ball of the innings, Sharma took the responsibility of scoring runs in the powerplay overs and notched up a fifty off just 21 balls. He was dismissed for 66 off 28 balls with the help of six sixes and five fours while chasing a massive score of 215.
During his match-winning effort, Abhishek also surpasses his best ever runs tally of 426 achieved in 2022. The SRH opener has now amassed 467 runs from 13 innings at an average of 38.91 and a strike rate of 209.41. Along with his 39 sixes, he has hit 35 fours as well.
