Bengaluru: Royal Challengers Bengaluru opener Phil Salt has returned to the United Kingdom for medical scans after sustaining a finger injury during the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season, dealing a setback to the defending champions.
The England batter has already missed RCB’s last three matches, and the franchise is awaiting clarity on the extent of the injury and his potential return timeline.
According to reports, Salt picked up the injury while attempting a diving stop near the deep backward square leg boundary during RCB’s home defeat to Delhi Capitals on April 18.
While the franchise has not officially disclosed the exact nature of the injury, early indications suggest damage to a finger on his left hand, prompting the decision to send him back home for detailed scans.
The move is seen as precautionary, with both the player and the team hopeful of a timely recovery.
Salt had been one of RCB’s standout performers before the injury setback.
The aggressive opener scored 202 runs in six innings at a striking rate of 168.33, consistently providing quick starts at the top of the order. His form was crucial in setting the tone for RCB’s batting lineup as they aim to defend their maiden IPL title.
In Salt’s absence, Jacob Bethell has stepped in at the top of the order. The young batter is expected to continue in the role while Salt undergoes assessment and recovery.
RCB will be hoping Bethell can maintain stability and momentum in the opening slot during this crucial phase of the tournament.
The timing of the injury is particularly unfortunate for Salt, who had recently spoken highly of the team environment under director of cricket Mo Bobat, head coach Andy Flower, and batting mentor Dinesh Karthik.
The IPL had also marked a return to form for Salt after a relatively quiet ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign with England.
Meanwhile, RCB—currently led by Rajat Patidar—are on a brief six-day break following their defeat to Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
Several players have reportedly taken a short trip to the Maldives to recharge before their next fixture against Lucknow Super Giants.
Encouragingly for RCB, there is optimism that Salt’s injury is not long-term. Reports suggest that he could return to India later this month if the scans show no serious damage.
Phil Salt’s absence is a significant blow for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, given his explosive form at the top.
However, with cautious management and a positive recovery outlook, RCB will hope to have their in-form opener back in time as they push to defend their IPL crown.
