Mumbai Indians has long built a reputation as a master of the turnaround, a side that has repeatedly defied adversity to lift the Indian Premier League trophy a record five times.
This season, however, has told a different story.
The star-studded line-up has managed just two wins from nine outings, leaving it on the brink of elimination. While mathematical possibilities of a playoff berth remain, the equation is unforgiving: win every remaining game and rely on favourable results elsewhere.
Even that fragile hope could unravel quickly. A defeat against Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday would all but extinguish any realistic chance of a late resurgence.
Despite boasting some of the biggest names in Indian cricket, MI has struggled across departments. Captain Hardik Pandya (146 runs in eight innings) and Suryakumar Yadav have lacked consistency, with the latter managing just 183 runs in nine innings, including a solitary fifty.

Coming off a stellar campaign last year, where he amassed over 700 runs, expectations were high. However, Suryakumar has been troubled by hard-length deliveries, a key factor behind his lean run this season. Coach Mahela Jayawardene, however, believes Suryakumar remains in a “good space”, despite several well-timed shots finding fielders at the boundary.
Batting issues are worsened by Rohit Sharma’s absence with a hamstring injury, though he trained on Sunday, while Jasprit Bumrah has been off-colour.
Things have not been much better for LSG.
Despite its bowlers, led by Mohammed Shami and Mohsin Khan, putting up a fighting show, the batting has faltered as partnerships have been rare, and PowerPlay returns have been inconsistent. Captain Rishabh Pant has struggled for form, compounding the woes further this season.
On paper, it is a clash between two bottom-ranked sides, but when they meet, pride will be at stake along with a fading hope of a miracle.
