MS Dhoni tried his best but couldn’t win the game for Chennai Super Kings in Bengaluru. The 27-run defeat ended the defending champions campaign in the Indian Premier League 2024 with Royal Challengers Bengaluru make it to the playoffs. Former India player Irfan Pathan said that the five-time champions shouldn’t retain Dhoni if they are thinking about the long term prospect.

MSD was injured during the early stages of the 17th season and played with a muscle tear in his knee. He batted for a few balls in the league, hitting fours and sixes. However, it back-fired in a couple of games as the team couldn’t post a competitive total.

In the virtual knockout match against the Faf du Plessis, the visitors were chasing 219 in 20 overs to win the contest. However, they needed 201 runs to qualify for the next round even if they had lost the match. Chennai were unable to complete any of the requirements and went out of the league stage.

Dhoni amassed 25 runs off 13 balls, laced with 3 fours and 1 six but Yash Dayal ended his innings to put the Kings out of the game.

“CSK will have to pay hefty amount if they want to retain MS Dhoni. According to me, CSK shouldn’t retain him if they are thinking about long-term planning. If Dhoni is going to play three or four balls, he should be released. Dhoni should agree to play three or four overs. Also, he once stated that Chennai need players who play for the team and not the fans. However, he did the same thing,” Irfan Pathan said
