Jaipur: Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara has issued a firm reminder on maintaining team culture after skipper Riyan Parag was caught vaping in the dressing room during the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season.
The controversy, which surfaced through a video on social media, quickly drew widespread attention and criticism, raising questions about discipline and professionalism within the Rajasthan Royals camp.
Addressing the issue ahead of Rajasthan Royals’ clash with Delhi Capitals, Sangakkara made it clear that such incidents are not beneficial for the team environment.
“Such controversies are no positives for the team. Both issues have been addressed by the BCCI and the franchise,” Sangakkara said.
He emphasised that the episode should serve as a reminder to players, particularly leaders, about the importance of upholding the values and standards expected within the team.
“It is a reminder to the players that they have to maintain the team’s culture,” he added, underlining the responsibility that comes with leadership roles.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has already taken initial action against Parag, imposing a fine of 25 per cent of his match fee and awarding one demerit point for what has been classified as a Level 1 offence.
However, the matter may not end there. The board has indicated that further disciplinary proceedings are under consideration, with the possibility of stricter penalties if deemed necessary.
In an official statement, the BCCI said it is “exploring other options to initiate proceedings for stringent action” to ensure that the integrity and reputation of the IPL remain intact.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also confirmed that the board is still evaluating the situation and that a final decision on additional action is yet to be made.
While the controversy has created a stir off the field, Sangakkara was keen to shift the focus back to cricket. He reiterated that both the franchise and the governing body have addressed the matter and that the team must now concentrate on its performances.
Incidents like these, especially involving a captain, can influence team morale and public perception. The Royals management appears determined to handle the situation internally while reinforcing discipline among players.
Despite the off-field distraction, Rajasthan Royals have enjoyed a strong campaign so far. The team currently sits fourth on the points table, having secured six wins from nine matches.
Their consistent performances have kept them firmly in contention for a playoff spot, making it crucial for the squad to avoid further distractions at this stage of the tournament.
The Royals are scheduled to face Delhi Capitals in Jaipur on May 1, a match that could further strengthen their position in the standings if they manage to secure a win.
The vaping controversy involving Riyan Parag has brought attention to the importance of discipline and professionalism in high-profile tournaments like the IPL. While the Rajasthan Royals and the BCCI have taken initial steps to address the issue, Sangakkara’s remarks underline a broader message about maintaining team culture and accountability.
As the tournament progresses, the focus for Rajasthan Royals will be on sustaining their on-field momentum while ensuring such incidents do not disrupt the team’s campaign.
