IPL 2026: Rickelton made a place in the special club of Jayasuriya and Rohit by hitting 5 sixes in the powerplay.

Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) faced each other in the 44th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 played in Chennai. In this match held at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Mumbai’s young opener Ryan Rickelton made a special achievement by batting brilliantly in the powerplay.

Rain of sixes in powerplay, entry in special club

Ryan Rickelton, who came to open for Mumbai, adopted an aggressive style in the first six overs and hit 5 sixes. With this, he became the second batsman for Mumbai Indians to hit the most sixes in the powerplay of an IPL innings. Before him, Sanath Jayasuriya had done this feat. Rickelton scored 37 runs in 24 balls, in which all his big shots came in the form of sixes.

On the other hand, during his unbeaten innings of 114* runs, Jayasuriya had hit 6 sixes in the powerplay overs itself. MI’s powerplay score in that match was 78/0 and Jayasuriya had attacked the Chennai bowlers hard from the very beginning. This match was played in the first edition of IPL i.e. 2008. Not only this, Rohit Sharma has also hit 5 sixes during a powerplay.

Mumbai won the toss and chose to bat

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and decided to bat first. Will Jacques started the innings with Rickelton, but the team could not get as strong a start as expected.

Naman Dhir’s struggle in the middle order

Naman Dheer scored the maximum runs for Mumbai. He played an inning of 57 runs with the help of 4 sixes and 3 fours and played an important role in taking the team to a respectable score. However, the rest of the batsmen failed to play big innings.

Performance of other batsmen

The team’s leading batsman Suryakumar Yadav returned to the pavilion after scoring 21 runs, while captain Hardik Pandya could score only 18 runs in 23 balls. Due to wickets falling at regular intervals, Mumbai team could not score a big score.

Mumbai’s innings ended at 159 runs

Mumbai Indians scored 159 runs losing 7 wickets in 20 overs. Even though the team had a fast start, the rhythm could not be maintained in the middle and last overs, the effect of which was clearly visible on the total score. However, in this match Mumbai had to face defeat against CSK by 8 wickets.
