Chennai Super Kings batting coach Michael Hussey has revealed the reason behind MS Dhoni’s absence from the venues when his franchise takes the field in IPL 2026. The legendary wicket-keeper batter is attending practice sessions but is not attending matches during the 19th season.

Dhoni is recovering from a calf injury, and according to Hussey, Dhoni prefers the team over attention.

He mentioned that Dhoni felt his presence during the games could distract his teammates, as cameras and the crowd shifted attention away from the players’ performance.

“He is a team-oriented guy who always wants the best for the team. He is not coming to the stadiums because he thinks it would distract him. The cameras would show him. The fans would cheer for him. He wants the team to give their best and do their stuff,” Hussey said ahead of CSK’s match against the Mumbai Indians on Saturday.

“It is not my decision to make. Dhoni is not willing to come to matches because he has a reason,” he added.

Hussey added that Dhoni is watching from home and gives his input during training sessions. He shares his experience and keeps everyone motivated. He highlighted that Dhoni’s decision is aimed at ensuring the team focuses on performance without being affected.

“He is watching matches. I love having him around as he offers wisdom. He makes everyone feel confident. He is attending training sessions and helping other players. He is not willing to act as a distraction to the team, and that’s why he decided to stay away on match day,” he added.

Dhoni has yet to feature in an IPL 2026 match. Hussey had earlier said that Dhoni’s participation depends on his recovery from a calf injury, as he can’t run quickly between the wickets at the moment. The Chennai Super Kings are sixth in the standings, with six points.
