Mumbai Indians (MI) had suffered a big setback a few days ago in IPL 2026. New Zealand's spin all-rounder Mitchell Santner was out of the entire season due to injury. Santner was injured while trying to take a catch near the boundary in the home match against Chennai Super Kings. His shoulder was badly injured. Now a big update has come on his injury, which has increased the tension of the New Zealand Cricket Board. This injury of Santner is quite serious.
New Zealand white-ball captain Mitchell Santner will be away from cricket for at least a month due to an injury sustained during IPL 2026. He has suffered a grade-3 ACL shoulder injury. Santner returned to New Zealand after the injury. He got the scan done and got it examined by a specialist on Friday (1 May 2026). Doctors have prescribed a program of rest and rehabilitation for at least a month. Due to which he will not be able to play many big matches in the coming days.
Due to this injury, Santner has been ruled out of the one-off Test against Ireland at the end of May and the first Test against England at Lord's. His availability in the second and third Tests against England will be decided later. If he is not fit on time, he may be out of the England series also. Let us tell you, 34 year old Santner had joined Mumbai Indians quite late in this season of IPL. He had asked for leave after the T20 World Cup for personal reasons. In IPL 2026, he played 4 matches for Mumbai, in which he took 5 wickets and scored 26 runs. But due to injury he was out of the rest of the season.
This injury of Santner is very disappointing for New Zealand cricket, because Santner is an important all-rounder of the team and captain in white-ball format. The team will now have to work on different planning in his absence. Let us tell you, recently New Zealand had reached the final of the T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Santner, where the team lost to India. Even if Santner misses the Test matches in May-June, it is expected that he will be available for the ODI and T20I series against West Indies in July.
