Batting ace Virat Kohli backs India skipper Rohit Sharma on his opinion on the IPL’s Impact Player rule. Kohli suggested the BCCI to reconsider the new regulation, which he believes has utterly ruined the game’s balance.

In an interview with Jio Cinema, Kohli stated that although entertainment is part of the game, bowlers shouldn’t be concerned about conceding every ball for a four or a six. In fact, three of the highest totals in the tournament’s history have been produced in the IPL 2024. The competition has seen a run of high scoring performances.

“I agree on Rohit’s opinion, entertainment is an element of the game, but there is no balance,” he opined.

“Bowlers  are wondering  what they should do. It’s the first time I have ever seen bowlers believe they will give up four or six every ball. We are playing very good cricket, and I don’t think it should be so dominant. An equal balance between bat and ball has a certain elegance. Not every squad possesses a Bumrah or Rashid,” Kohli continued.

The batter gave an explanation of how the Impact Player rule eliminated the sheath anchor function, enabling him to hit runs at a strike rate of 200 right from the first ball, something he was not able to accomplish in prior years.

“I’m telling you, with one extra batter, I play with a strike rate of 200 or higher during powerplays. I am aware that our number 8 is also a bater. I believe it has thrown off the balance, and I’m not the only one who feels this way,” he added.

Kohli expressed his hope that the BCCI would reconsider and make the best decision for Indian cricket.

“I’m sure Jay bhai already indicated that they are going to reconsider it, and I’m sure they’ll reach a decision that balances the game,” noted Kohli.

“As a batter, I find this rule great but the game should be exciting. Smashing boundaries and big hits are not exciting. Able to defend a total like 160 is thrilling,” he said.
