Virat Kohli etched his name further into the list of cricketing greats on Monday night, April 27, and in his hometown, New Delhi, by becoming the first player in history to breach the 9,000-run mark in Indian Premier League history. Achieving the feat during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s monstrous nine-wicket demolition of the Delhi Capitals, Kohli scored 25 off 13 runs and ascended a ‘Mount Everest’ of runs that currently leaves his closest competitors trailing by nearly 2,000 runs.
At the Arun Jaitley Stadium, which has a pavilion in his name, Virat Kohli came to the crease needing just 11 runs to reach the record 9,000 runs. The moment arrived on the final delivery of the power play. Facing Axar Patel, Kohli drove a length delivery down the ground to long-off for a single, bringing the dugout and the Delhi crowd to their feet. In 275 matches and 266 innings, Kohli’s tally now stands at a staggering 9,012 runs.

The defending champions turned the IPL 2026 match 39 into a football game for its single-digit scores. From the moment the first ball was bowled, RCB’s pace battery, spearheaded by a vintage Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3/5) and a Josh Hazlewood (4/12), exploited the early seam movement to reduce the Capitals to a mere 8/6 within the first four overs.
This historic collapse saw stalwarts like KL Rahul and Axar Patel depart for just 1 and 0, leaving the DC middle order in a state of absolute paralysis. While a 30 from Abishek Porel spared the hosts the ignominy of the lowest total in IPL history, the eventual target of 76 was a mere formality.
RCB’s top order treated the chase with utter disdain, sprinting to the finish line in just 6.3 overs to secure a nine-wicket victory, staying second on the points table with 12 points from 8 matches, trailing the leader Punjab Kings by just 1 point.
Delhi Capitals recorded their lowest-ever IPL total against RCB, being bundled out for just 75 runs. This was also the third-lowest total in DC’s entire franchise history.
