Mumbai Indians head coach Mark Boucher stated he had a word with Rohit Sharma after the loss against LSG, on his future plans. MI lost their final IPL 2024 game to LSG by 18 runs at the Wankhede Stadium.
Rohit finished as MI’s highest scorer with 417 runs, including a ton and a half century, despite slowing down in the second half of the season. The Wankhede crowd also gave him a standing ovation, suggesting that even the fans are afraid this may be Rohit’s final appearance in the MI jersey.
The rumors have been around for a while now. It came to light after Rohit was reportedly overheard talking to Abhishek Nayar, the assistant coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders, that nothing was going well at his ‘home’ MI. Although Rohit didn’t specifically mention MI in the unclear recording, many took his comments indicating that he wasn’t happy with the way things were going at MI.
“To be clear, there haven’t been much talks on Rohit’s future. I had a brief conversation with him last night or the night before to go over the season,” Boucher told the press.
“‘What’s next for Rohit Sharma?’ I asked. The World Cup (T20) is what he replied. And that is ideal. That’s all the information I require on Rohit Sharma’s future. I see him as the master of his own fate. There’s a mega auction ahead. Who can predict what comes next? We will simply need to accept each day as it comes,” he added.
Even though Rohit finished as the team’s highest run-getter, Boucher stated that Rohit’s season as a batter was in split in 2 sections and that the former captain would be unhappy with the end result.
“For him, it was nearly a season of two halves. He got off to a wonderful start, struck the ball cleanly in the nets, and even scored a fantastic century against CSK. Sincerely, we believed he was headed in the right direction and he could go out there and score some solid runs for us. Sadly, that is also the nature of T20 cricket,” the former wicketkeeper remarked.
