Over the years, only a handful of batters have fallen to this uncommon mode of dismissal, often sparking confusion and controversy. Here’s a look at those instances where batters were involved in Obs dismissals in IPL.

What is Obstructing the Field?

Obstructing the field is a mode of dismissal in cricket where a batter is given out if they interfere with fielding side’s attempt to gather or return the ball deliberately.

This includes a actions such as interrupting any part of body to deflect the ball away from the stumps or blocking a fielder’s throw.

The key factor in this dismissal is intent—umpires must determine whether the batter’s action was deliberate or simply a natural reflex to protect themselves. Because of this subjective element, obstructing the field decisions often lead to debate and controversy.

Though part of the laws of the game, such dismissals are extremely rare, especially in fast-paced formats like the IPL, where split-second reactions can sometimes result in unexpected outcomes.
