There was a lot of drama in the IPL 2026 match between Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders. On one hand, Lucknow's pacer Mohsin Khan destroyed Kolkata's batting by taking 5 wickets. Then Rinku Singh made an explosive comeback for the team. But the biggest drama happened in the last over of the match, when Kolkata fast bowler Karthik Tyagi bowled consecutive no-balls above the waist but even after this he was not removed from bowling.
Kolkata Batting first in this match, he scored 155 runs. In response, Lucknow had scored 139 runs after losing 7 wickets in 19 overs. In the last over, the team needed 17 runs to win, while Himmat Singh and Mohammed Shami were at the crease. Karthik Tyagi got 1 run on the first ball of this over but after this the drama started and the reason for this was 2 consecutive no-balls.
The second ball of this over of Karthik was very fatal. This full toss ball came straight towards his chest, on which Himmat somehow hit the bat and saved himself. The umpire immediately declared it a no ball. The next ball was a free-hit. But Karthik once again bowled a full toss, which was given a no ball by the umpire because it was also much above the waist. However, KKR took DRS on this but it was declared a no ball in the replay also.
If a bowler bowls a full toss ball above the waist twice in the same over, then according to the rules he is removed from bowling. KKR coach Abhishek Nair and captain Ajinkya Rahane also thought the same and hence spinner Anukul Roy was called to complete the over. But then the umpire stopped him and asked Karthik Tyagi to complete the over. This one decision shocked everyone as to why this happened?
This was really shocking but there is a reason for it. It is clear in the rules of cricket that for two full toss no-balls in an over, that bowler can be banned from the entire match, but this decision also has to be taken by the umpires. In fact, in case of a full toss no-ball, the most important aspect is whether the ball poses a threat to the batsman in any way or not. If the ball comes towards the batsman's body then it is considered dangerous.
This was not the case in Kartik Tyagi's case and the umpires took the same decision. Karthik's first no-ball was definitely dangerous. But the second full toss ball was far outside the off stump, which was not posing a threat to the batsman in any way. Therefore, the umpire did not classify it as dangerous and continued to bowl to Karthik Tyagi.
However, the decision to have Karthik bowl proved fatal for Lucknow. Himmat hit a four on the second freehit. But Karthik dismissed Himmat on the third ball. Now 7 runs were needed on the last 3 balls. Prince Yadav took one run bye on the fourth ball and Mohammed Shami came to bat. Shami had already hit a six before this. But he could not score any runs on the fifth ball. 7 runs were needed on the last ball and Shami hit a six and took the match into the super over. Lucknow could score only one run in the Super Over and Kolkata won the match on a single ball.
