The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to ask leading pacer Jasprit Bumrah to play the remaining games in the World Test Championship (WTC). Team India is currently sixth in the table, having accumulated 52 points from nine games so far with a win percentage of 48.15%.

According to the report carried by The Times of India, one unnamed BCCI source told the newspaper, “The attempt is to keep Bumrah fit to play all the Tests.

He is expected to play the four in Sri Lanka and New Zealand. The challenge will be to keep him fresh for the five Tests at home against Australia.”

The source also added: “The selectors won’t mind resting him for some ODI series. He played T20 cricket after a gap of two years in the Asia Cup last September and still delivered”.

Quick turnaround post IPL 2026 campaign

After the completion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, India are set to host Afghanistan for a one-off Test match.

With Gill’s side having their task cut out if they have to make the finals, the right-arm seamer will be a key player in the next few months. India’s pace ace has picked 185 wickets from 42 gamaes in WTC so far and just needs 11 scalps to go past Ravichandran Ashwin’s tally of 195.

Qualification for WTC final hanging by thread

Last June, the two-time WTC finalists began the current cycle with a drawn series against England. This was followed by a home series against West Indies and South Africa. The home team managed to beat the Caribbeans by a 2-0 margin before losing to the Proteas and suffer their second home series loss in 12 months.

After the Test match against the Afghans, the next challenge will be the tours of Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Gautam Gambhir-coached side will play two Tests each before hosting Australia for the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which will be a five-match series affair.
