Former India player and the current mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Gautam Gambhir, has become the favourite candidate of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to replace Rahul Dravid as Team India’s head coach.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Gambir has been contacted by the apex body of the Indian cricket to know about his interest and further discussions will take place after the end of the KKR’s campaign in the Indian Premier League 2024. The deadline to apply for the job is May 27, a day after the IPL final. Dravid has informed the board of his intention to not seek another term.

Gambhir, who is 42, hasn’t coached any team in the past. He has been a part of the coaching staff of Lucknow Super Giants and KKR. He was the mentor at Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022 and 2023 and the franchise made it to the playoffs. He joined KKR in 2024, helping the franchise to finish the league stage on top of the points table.

Gambhir played a key role in India’s title wins in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 World Cup. He also led the Knight Riders to two IPL titles.
