Ajit Agarkar: Ajit Agarkar's tenure as Chief Selector of Team India is ending in June this year. But, even before it ends, news of extension of his tenure has come to light. According to the report of Indian Express, the tenure of Ajit Agarkar has been extended for one more year. He will now remain the Chief Selector till June 2027. However, nothing official has been done yet by the Board of Control for Cricket in India regarding this.
Now the question is why BCCI decided to extend the tenure of Ajit Agarkar? Why is the board thinking of giving them 12 more months? There are three big reasons behind this. First, focus on winning the ODI World Cup 2027. Second, Ajit Agarkar's achievements as Chief Selector and third, Agarkar's decision-making ability.
There is not much time left for the ODI World Cup 2027. In such a situation, the first responsibility is to form a solid team with him. Regarding this, the board is thinking of extending the tenure of Ajit Agarkar rather than handing over the command of team selection to someone new.
Ajit Agarkar's achievements as Chief Selector have also been amazing. During his tenure as Chief Selector, India has won 3 ICC titles, which include the T20 World Cup of 2024 and 2026 and the Champions Trophy of 2025. This success of Agarkar now seems to be the reason for extension of his tenure.
While Ajit Agarkar achieved many achievements as Chief Selector, he also took some tough and important decisions, which had a positive impact on Team India. A senior BCCI official told The Indian Express that the transition period in the team was quite smooth during Ajit Agarkar's tenure. He took many bold decisions. Considering the same qualities of Agarkar, the board feels that he should continue his work in future also.
Ajit Agarkar, who has become the Chief Selector of Team India from June 2023, will again face many big questions when his tenure gets extended. And the biggest question will be about Rohit-Virat playing in the ODI World Cup 2027?
