Delhi: There was a time when multi-nation series were an important part of cricket, but now such series have almost ended for a long time. In such a situation, three African teams – South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia are planning to start a new T20 tournament. This proposal was recently discussed at the ICC Africa Regional Conference. In future, the aim is to organize it as ‘Africa Cup’ with six teams.
having 6 teams ‘Africa Cup’ will start from next year
According to the news published in Cricket Financial Journal, there was a discussion in the ICC Africa Regional Conference recently regarding organizing a six-team Africa Cup in the future. The top-3 teams of Africa will participate in this tournament, while the remaining three teams will be decided through qualifiers. However, the 6-team Africa Cup may start from next year. This year there is a possibility of a tri-series between South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, which can be hosted by Namibia in August.
Africa Cup is not new
It is worth noting that T20 Africa Cup is not a new tournament, but earlier only teams from Associate countries used to participate in it, which was later stopped due to lack of funds.
Idea going on in Europe also
A similar tournament is being considered in Europe, but it is not yet clear whether the England Cricket Board is interested in it or not. England is the strongest team in Europe, followed by Ireland and Scotland. If such a tournament starts in Europe, it can prove to be very beneficial for small teams.
