The Men’s team of India will undergo a transformation after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Rahul Dravid, who has been coaching the Men in Blue for years, will leave the post after the end of his contract.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah said that applications are being accepted for the role of head coach following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in June. The board is currently searching for the best person to succeed Dravid. According to reports, the BCCI is considering Stephen Fleming as a possible successor to Dravid. He is not, however, the only foreign coach that BCCI is keeping an eye on.
In addition to Fleming, the BCCI is reportedly considering former Australian captain Ricky Ponting as a possible candidate. In addition to being the head coach of the Major League Cricket (MLC) team Washington Freedom, Ponting is also the coach of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
As per sources, both Fleming and Ponting have not given a positive response. Despite their extensive understanding of Indian cricket, the demanding nature of a full-time position could be an issue.
In the past, India have performed well under foreign coaches, particularly under Duncan Fletcher, Gary Kirsten, and John Wright. India’s cricket team thrived under Wright, becoming a formidable opponent on any given day, even away from home. However, it was Kirsten who led India to victory in ODI World Cup in 2011. India advanced to the T20 World Cup final and won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 under Fletcher’s leadership.
There were rumours that VVS Laxman, the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) at the moment, might succeed Dravid. That, too, does not appear to be the case, though, as the BCCI does not currently wish to interfere with the NCA arrangement.
The next head coach will take position on July 1, 2024, and serve till December 31, 2027. The Test series against Australia scheduled in November in Australia will be the coach’s first major task.
