Michael Vaughan highlights tough competition in India’s T20 setup

According to Vaughan, this depth creates a highly competitive environment where only excellent performing players can secure a place. He stressed that Pant can no longer rely solely on his reputation and past performances.
“If he is going to open, he should be a little more adventurous. He should be a little more aggressive. India have a bunch of wicketkeepers like Samson, Kishan, and Jitesh Sharma. So it will not be easy for him to get back into the Indian T20I team. Now the biggest platform for him is to do well in the IPL,” Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.

Pant’s IPL 2026 campaign started on a shaky note as he signed for LSG Delhi Capitals Decided to open against. The move raised some questions, but the outcome did little to silence critics.
The left-handed batsman struggled to find rhythm during his short time at the crease, scoring seven runs off just nine balls before being run out at the non-striker’s end. His hesitant approach was in contrast to the fearless strokeplay that once defined his T20 batting.

Vaughan explains how Pant can return to the national team
Vaughan stressed that if Pant intends to open, he should adopt a more attacking mindset. He believes that the wicketkeeper-batsman’s natural game is built around intuitive strokeplay and daring shot-making – qualities that should be on full display, especially in the IPL.
He suggested that Pant should take inspiration from players who play with freedom and intent, rather than thinking too much about his role. According to Vaughan, the best version of Pant is the one who plays without fear, attacking the opposition right from the start. The former England captain also hinted that adopting a restrained approach could reduce Pant’s effectiveness, especially in a format that rewards high-impact performances.
“If I were in his place, I would be watching Suryavanshi. Because when Rishabh plays, he reminds me of a free-spirited character who tries to hit the ball out of the ground. And that’s how he should play,” Vaughn added.
