Chennai Super Kings suffered its second-heaviest defeat by balls remaining in its history as it got its IPL 2026 campaign off to an inauspicious start against Rajasthan Royals at the ACA Stadium in Barsapara, Guwahati.
On a night headlines were expected to be dominated by Sanju Samson’s debut in Chennai Super Kings yellow, the Rajasthan Royals bowlers put on a new-ball bowling clinic to leave the visitor four down in the PowerPlay. Every bowler claimed at least one wicket, with Jofra Archer, Nandre Burger, and Ravindra Jadeja all claiming two each.
Jamie Overton’s 43 was the only resistance with the bat for CSK, which was shot out for 127 all out.
In the response, Vaibhav Suryavanshi killed off any hopes of a Super Kings victory with a 15-ball fifty. After being dropped off his first ball, he carted the CSK bowlers to all parts to all but seal the result.
Though he fell before the end of the match, new RR skipper Riyan Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal took charge to see the side home with 47 balls remaining.
