As Chennai Super Kings (CSK) prepare for their IPL 2026 opener against Rajasthan Royals (RR), the game offers a glimpse into the franchise’s future strategy. Sanju Samson joined CSK in a pre-auction trade from RR, viewed not only as a solution for the present but also as a potential long-term replacement for MS Dhoni. CSK CEO Kasi Vishwanathan confirmed that MS Dhoni will be unavailable for the season opener, with Sanju Samson taking over the wicketkeeping duties.

Since his arrival, there has been plenty of discussion around Samson’s role behind the stumps. While it’s not yet clear how duties will be handled once Dhoni returns, Samson is expected to keep wickets for at least a few games.

“Sanju will obviously be keeping since MS Dhoni won’t be playing. He’s in great form and has been performing well in the nets, so we expect him to make the impact CSK need this season. Of course, Ruturaj is also capable of taking the team to new heights, and his captaincy will certainly inspire the squad,” Vishwanathan said.

Vishwanathan also shared his vision for the future, expressing confidence that the Kerala-born cricketer could become a key figure for CSK in the seasons to come

“When it comes to Sanju, we don’t want to put any pressure on him because we trust his abilities. I haven’t had much time to speak with him, having met him only a few days ago, and I make sure not to disturb him during practice. I’m confident that, with his talent and current form, Sanju will be a strong asset for us,” he added.
