Just before the start of IPL 2026, the Impact Player rule has once again come into the center of discussion. This rule, which came into effect in 2023, has been a subject of debate since the beginning and now according to the latest reports, most of the captains have openly expressed their displeasure over it.
This issue was discussed in detail in the meeting of captains of all 10 teams held in Mumbai. Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India has already decided to continue this rule till 2027, despite this the debate on it among players and cricket experts is not stopping.
Many captains present in the meeting expressed their disagreement with the impact player rule. According to sources, players believe that this rule is affecting the balance of the game and changing the traditional team combinations. However, BCCI has made it clear that this rule will now be reviewed only after 2027. That means, at present, the same rule will be applicable in the upcoming season of IPL.
The biggest impact of this rule is being seen on all-rounders. Akshar Patel had also openly given his opinion on this. He had said that earlier all-rounders were given importance to balance the team, but now the team management gives priority to the specialist batsman or bowler. In such a situation, the need for all-rounders is decreasing, which is a matter of concern for them.
This is not the first time that questions have been raised on this rule. Earlier, Rohit Sharma had also given his opinion against it. He believed that this rule could affect the development of all-rounders in Indian cricket. Hardik Pandya had also said that due to this rule, it has become difficult to create balance in the team and choose the right combination.
The Impact Player Rule has definitely given a new dimension to the strategy in IPL. Teams get additional options during the match, which can change the course of the game. But the debate regarding its side effects is continuously increasing. Now the biggest question is whether BCCI will make any changes in this rule after 2027 or will it continue.
