Chennai Super Kings has settled its opening combination ahead of IPL 2026, with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad confirming that he will partner Sanju Samson at the top of the order.

Speaking at the Captains Day event in Mumbai on Wednesday, Gaikwad said, “Rutu and Sanju,” when asked about the possible opening combinations involving Samson, himself and Ayush Mhatre.

The decision means Mhatre, one of CSK’s breakout performers last season, is likely to move down the order.

The 18-year-old scored 240 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 188.97 while opening in IPL 2025, after coming in as an injury replacement for Gaikwad. He was retained ahead of the 2026 season and also led India to the Under-19 World Cup title earlier this year.

CSK had multiple options at the top following Samson’s high-profile trade from Rajasthan Royals, which involved Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.

Samson’s recent form further strengthened his case. He was named Player of the Tournament in India’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign, scoring 89, 89 and an unbeaten 97 in three must-win matches.

With Gaikwad and Samson set to open, CSK has opted for experience at the top, leaving Mhatre to adapt to a new role.
