Chennai Super Kings defeated Rajasthan Royals by five wickets on Sunday to stay in contention for a spot in the IPL playoffs. With a remarkable victory, CSK bid farewell to their home crowd and promised to return for the IPL final, which will also take place at the Chepauk Stadium.
The Chennai bowlers executed a stellar job of restricting a strong RR batting lineup to a modest total of 141 by making excellent use of the sluggish Chennai surface. With 10 balls remaining, the home team claimed victory, riding on Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 41-ball 42.
Even though they got off to a strong start, the home team was in a spot of bother in the middle overs as wickets fell frequently. However, it was the CSK captain, who ensured that they reached the target.
Former India batter Aakash Chopra expressed dissatisfaction with Ruturaj’s, pointing out that the opener did not have much of an impact in his partnership with Rachin Ravindra,
“It appeared that Chennai would consider winning the game and marginally raising their net rate during their chase. They believed it was a great call to open with Rachin Ravindra rather than Ajinkya Rahane. At first, it appeared to be an RR versus RR contest; Rachin Ravindra against Rajasthan Royals,” he said.
“At the other end, Ruturaj Gaikwad was standing still. Watching from the opposite end, Rachin was smacking fours and sixes. RR against RR was the game up till Rachin Ravindra departed,” claimed Chopra.
In order to maintain their chances of making the playoffs, CSK must defeat Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their final game.
