Chennai: Before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has suffered a big setback. The team’s fast bowler Nathan Ellis is out of the entire season due to hamstring injury. Ellis was considered an important part of the team’s bowling strategy, especially his role in the death overs is very important.
With Ellis out, the team was faced with the challenge of maintaining balance, but the management immediately took a decision and included Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson in his place.
Left arm fast bowler Spencer Johnson is known for his different angle and speed. Along with swinging the new ball, he is also capable of bowling fast in the death overs. This is why he is being considered a versatile option for the team.
Johnson has performed well in T20 cricket in recent times. Especially in tournaments like Big Bash League (BBL), he has proved his usefulness by taking wickets continuously. He has more than 40 wickets to his name in the last few T20 tournaments, which shows his ability to perform under pressure.
Spencer Johnson’s record in IPL has not been particularly impressive so far. He has played a total of 9 matches in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, in which he has taken 5 wickets in his account. During this period his average has been 56.80 and economy rate 10.39, which shows slightly expensive bowling.
While playing for Gujarat Titans (GT) in 2024, he took 4 wickets, while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2025, he could take only 1 wicket. However, considering his speed and potential, the franchises are expressing confidence in him.
