Kolkata Knight Riders are heading into IPL 2026 with two significant pace bowling uncertainties still unresolved eight days before the season begins.

Head coach Abhishek Nayar addressed both in a press conference on Friday and the updates on Matheesha Pathirana and Harshit Rana paint a picture of a franchise scrambling to put together a workable bowling attack before their opener against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede on March 29.

IPL 2026: Abhishek Nayar gives KKR fans the Pathirana update they have been waiting for

Pathirana was bought by KKR for Rs 18 crore at the Abu Dhabi auction and was expected to solve their death bowling problem in the absence of Andre Russell. He picked up a hamstring injury during the T20 World Cup and Sri Lanka Cricket have been managing his rehabilitation since.

While Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed this week that Pathirana has completed his rehabilitation and been granted a no-objection certificate to participate in the IPL, Abhishek Nayar made clear on Friday that being cleared is not the same as being match fit.

“The latest communication we have had is that hopefully somewhere by mid-April is where he will be match fit. That is how it is looking for now,” Abhishek Nayar said.

KKR’s opening game is on March 29 and mid-April means Pathirana could miss the first three to four games at minimum. For a franchise that spent Rs 18 crore on a death bowling specialist the timing is deeply inconvenient.

IPL 2026: Abhishek Nayar on the search for Harshit Rana’s replacement at KKR

Rana sustained a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee during India’s T20 World Cup warm-up match against South Africa in February and underwent surgery. He is currently at the BCCI’s Center of Excellence and KKR are waiting on an update from the board before they can officially announce a replacement.

Abhishek Nayar was direct about how significant the loss is. “It is a big blow as Harshit Rana has been an integral part of the team for the past couple of seasons. Over the last few days we have looked at a few bowlers. We are trying to evaluate with the help of our leadership group as to who fits in and who can do that role best. As of this moment we have not made a decision but hopefully soon we can identify someone who we feel can make a difference to the squad.”

Several pacers are currently training with the franchise including KM Asif, Simarjeet Singh and Navdeep Saini.

KKR have two practice games scheduled before they leave for Mumbai on March 25 and Abhishek Nayar indicated the replacement announcement would most likely come before the squad departs. “Today is the first practice game and one more game on the 23rd. We will try to make sure we evaluate whoever we are picking before we actually make the announcement. It will take a few more days but most probably before we leave for Mumbai.”

IPL 2026: The broader picture and what KKR are working with

With Pathirana unavailable until mid-April and Rana out for the season KKR’s pace attack heading into the opener is considerably thinner than anyone expected when the auction finished.

Blessing Muzarabani arrives as the replacement for Mustafizur Rahman who was released on BCCI instructions and brings genuine quality after taking 13 wickets in six matches at the T20 World Cup. Cameron Green can contribute two to three overs of pace. Vaibhav Arora and Akash Deep form the Indian pace core.

But the gap left by Rana and the delayed arrival of Pathirana means the spin combination of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy will carry a heavier burden in the early games than KKR would have planned for.

KKR’s New Zealand trio of Finn Allen, Tim Seifert and Rachin Ravindra were set to join camp later in the week which offers some batting reinforcement but the bowling picture remains the most pressing concern as March 28 approaches.
