Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has decided to take legal action against the misuse of his identity using Artificial Intelligence, following the Men in Blue’s win in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
He highlighted the misuse of his identity through deepfakes, AI tools and unauthorised use for commercial gains and filed a lawsuit in the Delhi High Court on March 19.
According to TOI, he has levelled allegations against social media handles and e-commerce companies. He had urged the court to refrain from those using his image, voice and image without his approval.
He has filed the case against 16 parties, including X, YouTube, Amazon, Meta, Google and Flipkart. Gambhir is seeking INR 2.5 crore in damages. He mentioned that fake videos showing him announcing his resignation and commenting on Indian cricketers have been circulating. It is an attempt to spread fake and misleading information, which is impacting his reputation.
He also added that his identity is being used to earn money. The Delhi High Court is expected to hear the matter soon and take action.
Gautam Gambhir has been successful as India’s coach in white-ball cricket, with the team winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. It was a memorable moment as India became the first team to win two consecutive global titles. The Men in Blue are also the first team to win the tournament thrice and the first to win at home.
This is Gambhir’s second ICC trophy, with the first one coming in the form of the 2025 Champions Trophy. India had thumped New Zealand in the final.
While he has been ordinary as a coach in Test cricket, his track record in ODIs and T20Is is impressive.
