The Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir has broken his silence on rift rumours with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, saying that honesty, intent and learning from mistakes are key inside the Indian team dressing room.
Speaking to the media, Gambhir admitted that he is human and can also make mistakes.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their test retirements last May following India’s disappointing showing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, where the visitors suffered a 1-3 defeat.
However, the Ro-Ko duo had retired and had been out of five match test series against England. India levelled the series 2-2, but the rumours of Gambhir’s rift has let the senior players to stop playing the format.
‘Yes, I am human, and I should be allowed to make mistakes as well. Just like anyone else, players should be allowed to make mistakes,’ said Gautam Gambhir.
‘I must have made mistakes in the last 18 months. I don’t shy away from that, but I’ve always believed in one thing. Wrong decision with right intent is acceptable, but wrong decision with wrong intent is absolutely not acceptable in that dressing room,’ Gambhir added.
“For me, it is very simple. Till the time I am doing everything with honesty, till the time I can be honest to everyone in that dressing room, not only one or two people, but everyone from the masseur to the assistant coach, I can look in their eyes and I can talk to them, looking in their eyes, I think I’m doing a fair job with my position.”
“And that is one thing which I can live with, and that is one thing that I can promise you in the last 18 or 20 months, whatever my tenure has been, I think that is something that I can live with,” he added.
Gautam Gambhir has been appointed head coach until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, signing three and half year contract, longer than his predecessors.
But the dynamic shifts with the historic 2028 Los Angeles Olympicswhich will feature cricket’s return at the highest level, just six months after the World Cup concludes.
“I would love to be part of the Olympics. It is a huge honour. Very few get the honour to represent India at the Olympics,” Gambhir said.
“I was very clear from the first day, the tougher the game, the more aggressive you have to be. Come the big game, come the grudge game, you have got to be more aggressive,” Gautam Gambhir concluded.
