IPL 2026, KKR Squad Analysis: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) once again looks like a strong contender for the title in IPL 2026, but the team is facing some big challenges even before the start of the season. Three-time champions KKR had made smart moves in the mega auction and retention, but the risk of injuries in the pace attack could affect the balance of the team. Kolkata Knight Riders team is in deep trouble. In such a situation, this season is not going to be easy for them at all.

KKR prepared a strong team

KKR has kept its core group strong. Ajinkya Rahane has been retained as the captain, who was the team's highest run-scorer in IPL 2025. His experienced leadership and stability in the top order is a big plus point for the team. The remaining retention includes star players like Sunil Narine, Rinku Singh, Varun Chakraborty, Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora. At the same time, in the auction, KKR placed the biggest bet on Cameron Green, who was bought for a record Rs 25.20 crore. This is the most expensive overseas signing in IPL history. The second big purchase was Mathisha Pathirana, who was taken for Rs 18 crores. Pathirana is the team's trump card in the death overs with his slinging action and yorkers.

Clouds of crisis over pace attack

Kolkata Knight Riders was successful in preparing a strong team, but injuries to the players have increased the tension. The pace unit has names like Pathirana, Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik, Akash Deep and Kartik Tyagi. But the injury to two important fast bowlers has worsened the situation. Harshit Rana is going to be completely out of IPL 2026, he suffered an injury before the T20 World Cup and was recently seen walking with the help of crutches.

On the other hand, there is still uncertainty over the fitness of Mathisha Pathirana. This Sri Lankan bowler had to face calf strain against Australia during the T20 World Cup. Due to which there are questions on his availability. If he is not able to play in the initial matches, the team's bowling will become even weaker. In the absence of these two, KKR's pace attack will now depend on Vaibhav Arora, who was in good form last season. The remaining options include Akashdeep, Umran Malik and Kartik Tyagi. Umran has speed, but has a history of injuries. Kartik Tyagi also does not have much experience. However, the team has recently included Blessing Muzarabani, who can be a good option, but Harshit and Pathirana will be missed in the death overs.

What is the strength of KKR team?

The pairing of Finn Allen and Rahane in the top order can strengthen the team. Cameron Green and Rinku Singh will take over the finishing roles. At the same time, in the lower order, players like Rovman Powell, Ramandeep Singh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi provide depth to the batting. KKR's biggest strength is spin. The mystery spin duo of Narine and Chakravarthy can restrict the opposition team in the middle overs, especially on the spin friendly pitch of Eden Gardens, on which the team is going to depend the most.
