Delhi: After the crushing defeat against India in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, the New Zealand team once again appeared to be stuck in a difficult situation. The decision taken by Kiwi captain Mitchell Santner after the toss once again became a topic of discussion, because even in the first T20 match against South Africa, his strategy proved costly for the team.
Santner’s decision also proved to be harmful for New Zealand in the title match of T20 World Cup 2026. In the final played in Ahmedabad, he won the toss and invited India to bat first. The Indian team took full advantage of this opportunity and scored a huge score of 255 runs in 20 overs. The New Zealand team could not stand the pressure of such a big target and had to face defeat by 96 runs.
About a week after the World Cup final, in the first match of the T20 series against South Africa, Santner decided to bat first after winning the toss. However, this decision completely backfired on the difficult pitch of Mount Maunganui.
New Zealand’s batting looked completely disintegrated in this match. South Africa’s bowlers maintained pressure from the beginning, due to which the Kiwi batsmen could not survive and score runs. The result was that the entire team was all out after scoring 91 runs in just 14.3 overs and could not even cross the 100-run mark.
South African bowlers bowled very disciplined. 19-year-old debutant fast bowler Nkobani Mokoena bowled a lethal spell, taking 3 wickets for 26 runs and completely destroyed New Zealand’s batting.
The South African team, which came to chase the small target of 91 runs, did not face much trouble. The team batted with restraint and achieved the target by losing 3 wickets in 16.4 overs and won the match by 7 wickets.
Wicketkeeper batsman Connor Esterhuizen played an important role in South Africa’s victory. He played a brilliant inning of 45 unbeaten runs in 48 balls, which included 2 fours and 2 sixes. His restrained batting helped the team reach the target easily.
With this victory, South Africa has taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20 series against New Zealand. The second match of this series will be played on March 17 in Hamilton, where the New Zealand team will try to make a comeback.
