The Indian Premier League has never been short of drama. One season can turn an unknown player into a household name, while the next can deliver a harsh reminder of how unforgiving the tournament’s ecosystem can be. Performances that light up one edition do not always guarantee security in the next.
The IPL 2025 season saw several players step into the spotlight with match-winning performances, breakout campaigns, and moments that captured fans’ imagination. Yet when franchises reshuffled their squads ahead of the 2026 auction, some of those very names found themselves without a bid.
From surprise heroes to unexpected snubs, here are five players who stole the spotlight in IPL 2025 but still went unsold in IPL 2026, highlighting just how unpredictable the league’s talent market can be.
However, going unsold in the 2026 auction does not necessarily mean the end of a player’s IPL journey. The nature of the tournament means opportunities can still arise, with franchises often bringing in unsold players as injury replacements midway through the season.
1. Jonny Bairstow

Jonny Bairstow has often found himself on the brink of missing out on the Indian Premier League. The England wicketkeeper-batsman went unsold at the 2025 auction but was later signed by the Mumbai Indians during the latter stages of the season as a replacement for Will Jacks.
However, the aggressive top-order batter once again failed to attract buyers at the latest mini-auction, raising the possibility that his IPL journey may have reached its end.
Over the years, Bairstow represented three franchises, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians, scoring 1,674 runs in 52 matches. His IPL career also featured two centuries, the most memorable coming against the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, when his unbeaten 108 off 48 balls powered Punjab Kings to a stunning chase of 262.
2. Jake Fraser-McGurk

Jake Fraser-McGurk was one of the most explosive young batters in the Indian Premier League in recent seasons, but surprisingly found no takers in the 2026 auction. The Australian opener had burst onto the scene with his fearless approach at the top of the order for the Delhi Capitals, becoming known for his ultra-aggressive powerplay batting.
During IPL 2025, Fraser-McGurk continued to showcase his attacking style, scoring quick runs and maintaining a striking strike rate that kept bowlers under pressure. However, despite his ability to change games in a matter of overs, franchises opted to look elsewhere during the auction, leaving the talented youngster unsold.
3. Devon Conway

Devon Conway has been one of the most consistent overseas batters in the Indian Premier League in recent years, particularly during his time with the Chennai Super Kings. However, despite his reputation as a reliable top-order batter, the New Zealand opener surprisingly went unsold in the 2026 auction.
Across his IPL career, Conway has scored over 1,080 runs in around 29 matches, averaging close to 50 runs and striking at around 140. His record includes multiple half-centuries and a highest score of 92*. One of his most memorable seasons came in IPL 2023, when he was among CSK’s leading run-scorers and played a key role in the team’s title-winning campaign.
4. Karan Sharma

Karn Sharma has been part of several franchises during his long career in the Indian Premier League, representing teams such as Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad and most recently the Mumbai Indians during the 2025 season. However, the experienced spinner went unsold at the 2026 mini-auction despite entering with a base price of INR 50 lakh, meaning he is set to miss out on the upcoming edition of the tournament.
Sharma featured for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 and delivered a steady campaign with the ball, picking up seven wickets and providing useful depth to the bowling attack.
5. Deepak Hooda

Deepak Hooda featured in IPL 2025 for the Chennai Super Kings, where he had a relatively quiet campaign. Hooda played only a handful of matches and managed limited runs, often batting in the middle order without making a significant impact on the scoreboard.
Across his IPL career, Hooda has played more than 100 matches and scored over 1,496 runs, along with contributing a few wickets with the ball. Despite his experience and versatility, his modest returns in IPL 2025 and intense competition for middle-order spots saw him go unsold in the 2026 mini-auction, leaving his future in the league uncertain for now.
The stories of these five players underline one of the defining truths of the IPL: reputation and past performances rarely guarantee a place in the next season. With franchises constantly rebuilding their squads around form, balance, and future potential, even players who shine one year can find themselves overlooked the next.
Yet, the nature of the tournament means the door is rarely completely closed. Injuries, mid-season replacements, and changing team strategies often give unsold players another opportunity to return. For the likes of Jonny Bairstow, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Devon Conway, Karn Sharma, and Deepak Hooda, the IPL story may still have another chapter waiting to be written. In a league known for dramatic comebacks, today’s auction snub could easily become tomorrow’s redemption arc.
