India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has once again sparked debate about his Test cricket credentials, despite his exceptional performances in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Former England batter Alastair Cook questioned whether Bumrah has consistently delivered long, and decisive spells in the longer format of the game.

During India’s successful campaign in the recently concluded T20 World Cup, Bumrah was a standout performer. He finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker, claiming 14 wickets in eight matches at an impressive average of 12.42 and an economy rate of 6.21.

“I honestly believe that if Jasprit Bumrah were playing for England, they’d be champions. He’s the finest bowler I’ve ever witnessed. I’ve been following cricket closely since 1985 or 1986, and in all that time, he stands out as the best I’ve seen,” Vaughan said on the Stick to Cricket podcast.

Former player Alastair Cook highlighted Bumrah’s bowling in Test cricket.

“Is he the best when it comes to producing game-changing spells in Test cricket? Well, he’s undoubtedly the top all-format bowler, that’s for sure. You can confidently say that. But has he ever delivered something like an 8/15 in a Test match, or is he not the type of bowler who does that?” Cook asked.

However, former England captain Michael Vaughan countered these doubts by praising Bumrah as one of the most lethal bowlers in world cricket, citing his remarkable achievements, especially in Australian conditions.

“I’ve watched him bowl in Australia, and some of his spells were truly exceptional, even on flat pitches,” Vaughan said.

Bumrah’s Test record further reinforces his prowess. In 52 matches, he has taken 234 wickets at an average of 19.79, maintaining an economy rate of 2.77, and has secured 16 five-wicket hauls. Among bowlers with over 200 wickets, he holds the best average in Test cricket.

Notably, he has conceded over 100 runs in a single Test only once, and New Zealand is the only country where his bowling average exceeds 30. Since October 2024, Bumrah has been ranked as the number-one Test bowler.

Bumrah is expected to focus more on ODIs and Test cricket, continuing to anchor India’s pace attack as a key strike bowler.
