Hardik Pandya has landed in a fresh controversy after a complaint was filed against the Indian all-rounder over alleged disrespect toward the national flag during the Indian team’s post-match celebrations after winning the T20 World Cup 2026.
The incident occurred during victory celebrations following India’s win over New Zealand in the final of the T20 World Cup match at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Sunday, March 08. The complaint has sparked debate, with allegations claiming that Pandya mishandled the Indian tricolour while celebrating on the field.
According to reports, a complaint seeking legal action against the cricketer was submitted to the police by Pune-based advocate Wajid Khan. The complainant alleged that Pandya wrapped the national flag around his body and behaved inappropriately during the celebrations. The complaint further stated that such behaviour amounted to disrespect toward the national flag and called for action under relevant laws.
“The act constitutes an offence under the relevant law, and legal action should be taken. It is the duty of every citizen to respect the dignity of the national flag,” Wajid stated.
According to the concerned lawyer, the Choryasi-born disrespected the Indian flag several times during the celebrations. He claims that Hardik was seen dancing and roaming around here and there; he was also lying on the stage alongside fiancee Maheika Sharma with the flag wrapped around his shoulder.
“You must have seen the T20 World Cup here. Hardik Pandya was dancing with his girlfriend in celebration of his victory. The national flag was tied to his back… According to Section 2 of the 1971 National Flag Act, we should respect the dignity of the national flag.
However, Hardik Pandya was so lost in the celebration of his victory that he was lying with his girlfriend, wearing the national flag… I believe it is an insult to the national flag,” advocate Wajid Khan was quoted as saying by India.com.
A police official confirmed that the complaint had been submitted at the Shivajinagar Police Station in Pune, although further details about potential action over the matter are currently awaited.
