Gautam Gambhir: Coach Gautam Gambhir is still in trouble, sword hanging even after T20 title

When Gautam Gambhir was made the head coach of Team India, everyone expected that he would continue the habit of success with Team India also. Just 2 months before becoming the head coach of Team India in July 2024, Gambhir, as a mentor, had led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title after 10 years. In just one and a half years, Gambhir proved that the decision to make him coach was right. Under Gambhir's coaching, Team India has so far won 2 ICC titles, which has given them a big status in the history of Indian cricket. But despite this, the sword is hanging over Gambhir, his job remains under threat.

When BCCI Gautam Gambhir When he was appointed the coach of Team India, he was given a contract of 3 years till the 2027 ODI World Cup. The reason for this was the difficult decisions like Team India's schedule, confidence in Gambhir's ability and also the responsibility of making changes in the team. Gambhir was handed over the command of the team in all three formats, out of which he has made major changes in Test and T20, while efforts are going on in ODI also. But when it comes to results, the team has been successful in ODI and T20 and has won one trophy each, but the performance in the Test format has continued to deteriorate.

Test performance under question

This is the only format, due to which the sword is hanging on Gambhir. But this danger is not on his entire coaching, but only on the coaching of Test format, where the results have not been in favor. Ever since Gambhir took over the coaching of Team India, the performance of the Indian team in Test cricket has continuously declined. Team India has won only 2 Test series at home against Bangladesh and West Indies, whereas it drew the Test series on the England tour, which was a big achievement.

But the team had to face defeat on the Australia tour after 10 years. But the problem is not the defeat in Australia, but the defeats on home soil, which destroyed the excellent record. First New Zealand and then South Africa defeated India and the Indian team in the test series. Not only defeated, but both the teams made a clean sweep. Team India played 5 matches against these two teams and lost all five. This destroyed the years old record of Team India and because of this Gambhir is facing constant criticism.

Danger remains in the coming months also

There are no questions on Gambhir's coaching record in T20 and ODI, but if Team India's performance in Tests does not improve in the coming months, then BCCI can take a tough step like 'split coaching'. Currently, Team India has to play the next test at home against Afghanistan in June. Team India will definitely win this match, hardly anyone has any doubt about it. But after that the Sri Lanka tour and then the New Zealand tour will be important for Gambhir's Test coaching. If the results are not good or the team fails to compete, then Gambhir may be dismissed and he will remain only the ODI-T20 coach.
