The Sanju Samson vs MS Dhoni debate has resurfaced after India’s T20 World Cup triumph, with an old remark from current Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir once again sparking discussion among cricket fans.

Sanju Samson had a successful run in the 2026 T20 World Cup, becoming third highest run getter in the tournament. However, he did not have the best of starts in the recently concluded T20 World Cup as he initially did not feature in the team’s playing 11.

Once he got chances in playing 11, he made a dazzling performance in three knockout games. Making a brilliant knock in must win clash against West Indies, he went on to produce back-to-back fifites and anchored the innings in Semifinals and Finals.

Sanju Samson made a stunning 89 runs off 46 deliveries in the finals where he silenced the concerns over his credentials over the past decade. He also emerged as the third highest run getter in T20 World Cup 2026.

Among India’s highest run getter in a single T20 World Cup, Samson had amassed 321 runs in 5 innings surpassing Virat Kohli‘s (319 runs).

After a match-winning efforts against West Indies and England, he also become the second Indian wk-batters after MS Dhoni to score 1000 runs in T20 internationals.

However, amidst the on-field fireworks, a fresh debate erupted on social media when a viral post claimed that Samson had managed to ‘surpass the legacy’ of MS Dhoni.

Praising Sanju Samson’s recent performances, it is also important to recall Gautam Gambhir’s visionary tweet that Gambhir had posted six years ago backing the Kerala wk-batter.

“Sanju Samson is not just the best wicketkeeper batsman in India but the best young batsman in India! Anyone up for debate?” said Gautam Gambhir.

However, the question remains a short-term form can meaningfully be weighed against a career that shaped an era.

Dhoni’s cabinet features three ICC titles – 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy.

On the other hand, Sanju Samson has enjoyed a recent run, producing impactful performance that have reignited conversations about his long-term role in India’s limited-overs setup.

However, Sanju Samson rise has drawn attentions – but comparison with Dhoni’s legacy remains a perspective.
