India Edge Past New Zealand to Lift T20 World Cup Trophy For Third Time

India won their third T20 World Cup title after securing a 96-run victory against New Zealand in the finals of the T20 World Cup 2026.

A complete one-sided game has secured India’s comfortable victory, securing their third title and becoming the most successful team in the Short format. They also became the first back-to-back titles and the first team to secure the T20 World Cup title on home ground.

After being invited to bat first, Indian openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson made an aggressive start, scoring 92 runs, which is the Highest Powerplay Total in the T20 World Cup.

India had troubles during the initial stages of this edition of the tournament. However, bringing in Sanju Samson, India’s top-order woes were settled.

Abhishek Sharma, who did not have an impressive campaign, stepped up in the finals and added scores to the scorecard for India.

Abhishek Sharma went on to slam an 18-ball fifty and lost his wicket for 52 runs to Rachin Ravindra. From a wide delivery, Abhishek Sharma lost balance reaching for it.

India also made a record for smashing the fastest 100 in the T20 World Cup knockouts. They reached a hundred in 7.2 overs, which is the current best.

India went on to score 203 runs for the second wicket, where Sanju Samson got dismissed for 89 runs.

Jimmy Neesham bagged his second wicket of Ishan Kishan (54) and Suryakumar Yadav for a golden duck.

After Hardik’s dismissal for 18 runs, Shivam Dube, who came to bat, went on to score 26 runs in 8 deliveries with a strike rate of 325.

By the end of 20 overs, India went on to score 255 runs for 5 wickets, where James Neesham picked three wickets while Rachin Ravindra and Matt Henry bagged one wicket each.

Chasing 256 run target, Tim Seifert and Finn Allen opened the innings while Arshdeep Singh opened the attack.

Axar Patel bagged the wicket of Finn Allen for 9 runs. Rachin Ravindra, who came to bat, got dismissed for Rachi Ravindra for 1 run.

Axar Patel bagged the wicket of Glenn Phillips for five runs as New Zealand lost three wickets for 47 runs. By the end of powerplay, New Zealand scored 52 runs with Tim Seifert and Mark Chapman at the crease.

With Hardik Pandya picking the wicket of Chapman for 3 runs, Tim Seifert added fifty before being dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy.

However, Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner tried to forge the innings; however, Axar Patel bagged the wicket of Daryl Mitchell for 17 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah bagged the wickets of James Neesham (8), Matt Henry (0) and Mitchell Santner for 43 runs.

New Zealand is on tough spot as they lost 9 wickets for 152 runs. With Abhishek Sharma bagging the wicket of Jacob Duffy, New Zealand lost all 10 wickets for 159 runs.

India secured a 96 run victory and won back to back titles in T20 World Cup. Jasprit Bumrah picked four wickets while Axar Patel bagged three wickets.

Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy and Abhishek Sharma have one wicket each in their respective spells.
