In the midst of New Zealand’s victory in the semi-final match, a big controversy arose when South African captain Aiden Markram was caught out, where the third umpire Darryl Mitchell upheld the catch and now a big uproar has arisen regarding this.
From the fans present in the stadium, to the players and even on social media, only one question is being heard everywhere – was Markram really out? The catch that dismissed Aiden Markram in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup was quite controversial and has created a massive uproar on social media.
The teams of South Africa and New Zealand were face to face in the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2026. South Africa lost 2 wickets on the score of just 12 runs. After this, a good partnership was being formed between captain Aiden Markram and Dewald Brewis and both of them took the team beyond 50.
Aiden Markram was playing on 18 runs when he tried to play a big shot to Rachin Ravindra on the fourth ball of the 8th over and Daryl Mitchell took a long dive down and caught it at long on, but this catch was very close to the ground.
Replays showed that the ball probably went into Mitchell’s hands after touching the ground, leading many to believe that it was not a clean catch. Kiwi fielder Darryl Mitchell himself did not look so sure, and he showed complete sincerity from his side by gesturing to check it after taking the catch.
Third umpire Nitin Menon looked at replays from several angles for the decision and finally declared him out. There has been an uproar after this. Many spectators and supporters said that the catch was made when the ball touched the ground, which should have been not out according to the rules. Many fans taunted that despite taking time in replay technique and decision making, the right decision was not taken. At the same time, some people argued that if the fielder’s fingers were under the ball then according to the rules the out is correct.
The umpire gave the out decision, after which this decision proved to be not at all clear among the social media and the audience. Most people believe that the ball hit the ground and it should have been not out.
