Glenn McGrath has backed Jasprit Bumrah to bring his A-game to the fore in the T20 World Cup semi-final clash against England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, March 5. The Australian legend called Bumrah a big-match player, adding that such cricketers lift their game for big occasions.
Bumrah has been in stunning form in the ongoing tournament. In the last game against the West Indies, which was a do-or-die encounter at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, the right-arm pacer bagged the wickets of Shimron Hetmyer and Roston Chase in the space of three deliveries to change the complexion of the game.
"I think Jasprit is a big-game player. Sometimes in the big games, these players lift from their normal game. Not saying the focus is not there, but they really love those big moments, big games. I've got total faith in Bumrah when it comes to big matches," McGrath said while speaking at the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai, where he serves as director.
McGrath recalled his time in the Australian team, reminiscing how they enjoyed the pressure that came with big games like finals.
"You enjoy it.
You just bring it back to its simplest form. The team I played in, I just felt our danger period was getting to the final. Once we were in the final, I thought the game was all over. I think the team likes pressure. They like challenges. They're up for it," he said.
The 56-year-old stalwart added that top-tier players are defined by how they deliver when the stakes are highest.
"In the final, the big game, the best teams in the world, the best players, that's where they perform. For me, the reason you went to a World Cup was to play in the final and win the final.
All the matches leading up to it were just things you have to do to get there. You focused, switched on and enjoyed the pressure," he concluded.
India have won six matches in the tournament so far. Their only defeat came against South Africa in the Super 8 stage.
On the other hand, England have also won six matches. The West Indies were the only team to beat them.
