India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana has said the Indian women’s team is determined to stay consistently at the top and build an era of dominance in world cricket.
Fresh from their maiden 50-over World Cup triumph, the Women in Blue have now shifted focus to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5.
India began the year on a high, clinching a T20 series win over Australia — their first bilateral T20I series triumph against the formidable rivals in a decade. Mandhana stressed that the team’s goal is no longer about isolated wins but sustained excellence.
“This Indian team has spoken about being consistent. It’s not about who we’ve beaten or what’s happened in the past. That’s not important anymore,” Mandhana said on BCCI.tv.
“We are on the verge of a transition where we want to dominate world cricket. Whoever we beat and wherever we beat them doesn’t matter. We just want to consistently stay at the top,” she added.
In the series-deciding third T20 in Adelaide, Mandhana struck a match-defining 82 and stitched a 121-run stand with Jemimah Rodrigues, who made 59, to power India to 176 for 6. The bowlers then restricted Australia to 159 for 9 to seal the series.
Mandhana also expressed her fondness for Adelaide, calling it her favorite city in Australia.
“I’ve always loved Adelaide, even before playing here. It’s peaceful and beautiful. A few Aussies will be very happy when I say this, I think it’s the best city in Australia,” she said with a smile.
With 2026 being a T20-focused year, Mandhana acknowledged that while India’s ODI unit looks settled, work remains in the shortest format.
“Last year was largely about one-day cricket. This year is about T20s. We are a well-settled ODI side, but in T20s we are still figuring out our best XI and best 15,” she said.
She credited the Women’s Premier League for playing a significant role in sharpening India’s T20 skills and providing depth ahead of the global tournament.
