Delhi: The teams of India and South Africa will face each other on Sunday in the Super-8 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. This match to be held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is considered special in many ways, because for the first time after the final of T20 World Cup 2024, both the teams will face each other in a World Cup match. Last time, in the title match, India won the trophy and won it, whereas South Africa missed the title even after coming very close to winning.
The intensity of the 2024 final will still be fresh in the hearts of the South African team. At one time in that match, the Proteas’ hold seemed strong, but the Indian team made a brilliant comeback and turned the match. This is why the upcoming match is also being seen as an opportunity for South Africa to take revenge, while India would like to maintain that psychological edge.
If we look at the mutual T20 International records of both the teams, India’s performance has been more impressive. Of the 35 matches played so far, India has won 21, while South Africa has been successful in 13 matches. One match ended without result. The figures clearly indicate that India has maintained a consistent lead in this rivalry.
Even in the knockout stage of ICC tournaments, India’s record against South Africa has been spotless. Knockout matches have been played between the two teams twice so far and India emerged victorious on both the occasions. India had won the final ticket by defeating South Africa in the semi-finals of the 2014 T20 World Cup, while the Indian team created history by winning the 2024 finals as well.
If we look at the recent performance, both the teams seem to be in excellent form. India has won consecutively in its last five T20 matches, due to which the team’s confidence is at its peak. On the other hand, South Africa has won four and lost only one match in its last five matches. In such a situation, there is every expectation of a tough and exciting match between the two teams.
Both the teams have been undefeated in the group stage, which further increases the importance of this match. On the basis of strong batting, balanced bowling and excellent fielding, both the teams are contenders for victory. Cricket fans can get to see a high-voltage match, where every over can change the direction of the match.
