Delhi: In the 39th match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Afghanistan performed brilliantly and registered its second win in the tournament by defeating Canada by 82 runs. Batting first, the Afghan team scored a huge score of 200 runs at the loss of 4 wickets in 20 overs, in response to which the Canadian team could only score 118 runs for 8 wickets and had to suffer its fourth consecutive defeat.
For Afghanistan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran started the innings with patience. Both the batsmen gave a steady start to the team by adding 47 runs for the first wicket. After Gurbaz’s dismissal, Zadran took the responsibility and took the innings forward and also maintained the run pace.
Ibrahim Zadran displayed excellent batting and scored unbeaten 95 runs. His innings included 7 fours and 5 sixes. This innings became the highest individual score so far for Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup. He left behind Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s old record of 85 runs.
Sadiqullah Atal played an important inning of 44 runs and supported Zadran well. There was a partnership of 95 runs in 59 balls between the two for the third wicket, which increased the pressure on the Canadian bowlers and played a decisive role in helping Afghanistan reach a big score.
After crossing the 200-run mark in this match, Afghanistan also recorded its highest team score in T20 World Cup history. Earlier, the team’s best score was 190/4 against Scotland in 2021.
Canada had a very poor start while chasing the target of 200 runs. The team lost 5 wickets by the time it reached 48 runs, due to which it was never seen making a comeback in the match. The middle order batsmen did put up some struggle, but due to the continuous falling of wickets, the run pace could not be maintained.
The bowling of experienced all-rounder Mohammad Nabi proved to be decisive in Afghanistan’s victory. He put pressure on Canada by dismissing Yuvraj Samra in his very first over. After this, he completely shook Canada’s batting by taking the wickets of Nicholas Kirton, Harsh Thaker and Dilon Heiliger. Nabi achieved important successes with economical bowling giving only 7 runs in 4 overs.
This victory was also special for Afghanistan because the team bid a victorious farewell to its head coach Jonathan Trott. This was the last match of former England cricketer Trott as head coach. In such a situation, this victory became memorable for both the team and the coach.
Rashid said that Trott made a big difference in the team’s thinking, discipline and performance by working with the players on a personal level. During his tenure, Afghanistan started playing competitive cricket against top teams and strengthened its reputation at the international level.
