San Francisco/New Delhi. A very disturbing news is coming out from California, America. Saket Srinivasaiah, a 22-year-old Indian student studying at the University of California, Berkeley, has been missing under suspicious circumstances since February 9. Saket, originally from Karnataka, is an alumnus of IIT Madras and is currently pursuing his master’s degree at Berkeley. After the news of the student’s disappearance, there has been a stir from America to his family in India.
Saket was last seen on Monday, February 9, near Lake Anja in the Berkeley Hills. Since then no trace of him has been found. Saket’s roommate Baneet Singh has requested people for help by sharing an emotional post on the social media platform LinkedIn. Baneet wrote, “My roommate Saket is missing since the 9th. We are making every possible effort to find him along with the police. This is a very difficult time for us, if anyone has any information please share.”
The Indian Embassy in San Francisco has taken strong cognizance of this matter. On Saturday, the Embassy issued an official statement expressing deep concern about the security of Saket. “We are extremely concerned about the disappearance of Saket Srinivasiah, a post-graduate student from Karnataka. The Consulate General is in constant touch with the student’s family and local police authorities to ensure that Saket is located as soon as possible,” the embassy tweeted.
Saket’s academic record has been excellent. He obtained a B.Tech degree in Chemical Engineering from IIT-Madras in the year 2025, after which he went to America for higher education. According to the information released by the Berkeley Police Department, Saket’s height is about 6 feet 1 inch and weight is about 73 kg. Police are investigating the areas around the lake and CCTV footage, but no concrete clue has been found so far.
The increasing incidents of disappearances or attacks on Indian students in America remain a matter of concern. Recently, Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi had also asked questions to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) regarding the safety of students. In response, the government had said that Indian missions abroad are fully committed to ensuring the safety of students in coordination with local authorities. The Saket case has once again sparked a debate about the safety of Indian youth on foreign soil.
